Megalomaniac - you'd be better off looking to live along Chicago Ave. in Noble Square, there is more going on over there, and it will be cheaper than Presidential towers (and you can easily bike to Kendall College fro there).

Oh, one last thing.

You will be best served by getting to know the cooking community.
Spend time at all the local farmer's markets and Canal street on Sunday.

When I was in cooking school I made friends with Mantusso, Trotter and Bayless and they helped guide me. Connections are actually more important for you career. (That and being nuts. As a chef once told me about going into cooking; "Better to put a bullet in your head". But if you have the bug you gotta ride it out.)

Yeah, most chefs I've known are "a bubble off", if you know what I mean. You've really got to have an endless supply of energy and almost a fanatical devotion to food (and a very thick skin) to pull it off without losing it completely.

Yeah, you could see how a person could get a distorted view of Chicago living there, viewing their apartment as refuge from the gritty, depressing streets on the way to their school on Goose Island. There are no trees...

'bubble off' ?
Most chef I know are egocentric, narcisistic, insecure, tantrum throwing, drug abusing, wack jobs. Every one of them is compensating for some massive flaw.

Imagine putting your life into your work and everything depending upon the opinion of uniformed masses. The tougher they seem the more insecure they are. Take Grodon Ramsey for example. The foul mouthed super agressive chef on TV. When he was learning, he used to break down in tears, hide in the corner of the kitchen and cry that he wan't good enough. Now he spends his time trying to make others cry to prove to himself that he isn't weak.

OK, I know some exceptions. But not enough to break the rule.

Now for the good side. I'm an IT geek who makes up to $150/ hr. (more than some doctors), but people could care less. Tell them I know how to cook and girls are lining up and showing you off to their friends.

People were more interested in me when I was an unemployed chef than an affluent geek.

Learn how to peel a lime or peach and you will never go home alone
