for personal and professional reasons i would like to learn and speak spanish. i have taken many spanish classes over the years but have basically forgotten most of it. all i have left is a limited vocabulary and the ability to conjugate in the present tense. does anyone know of any free courses or programs that could help me? i don't want to use computer software or cd's. i want a good old classroom setting.

I have a friend who teaches at the Cervantes Institute and says very good things about it.

My serious advice: Watch a telenovela every night (I can recommend a few). You will learn both the language and the culture and it will begin to seep into your brain even before you are very sophisticated. I have done this with non-spanish-speaking friends and the results are remarkable

Language Learning with Livemocha | Learn a Language Online - Free!

This program is free and excellent. I am hispanic and have **** poor fluency and this program is really helping me to gain some confidence.

never even thought of that, even though i learned my parents language that way. what shows would you recommend? do they have subtitles. the other day i saw a commerical for a show called "niños ricos" on an english channel station. i wasn't sure if it was a spoof or the real thing. i wanted to watch it because the show or at least the commerical showed subtitles and the show actually looked good.

move to Pilsen or Little Village. yeah, it's a tad dangerous in some spots (some may say this is an understatement), but it's about the closet you'll get to full immersion in Chicago

in high school, we watched a program called "Destinos" which was a telenovela combined w/ a learning program. it was a fun way to learn and I think you can watch the videos for free online (not quite sure where, but there's a similar program for French I watch for free online).

the reason you are forgetting is bek you are not going hungry or homeless when you fail to learn the language, that is what causes language acquisition------- its why americans are monolingual.
