My friend is in town visiting me and since I am relatively new to the city I made a mistake in telling him where to park. He got a $60 parking ticket yesterday. Against my advice he says he's not going to pay it (even though I offered to help him pay, since it was sort of my fault).

I know that Chicago has a very good system for catching up with parking offenders, but I'm not sure of the specifics. Can anyone tell me what exactly the Dept of Revenue can do to track him down? He was driving a rental car with out of state plates at the time, and he lives in New York.

Any have experience with this?

If it's a rental, the rental car company would track him down ..car was ticketed, not the driver .. Both Department of Revenue and the Rental Car Company would eventually turn over to a collection agency, meaning whacked credit ... Pay the darn thing..or it will resurface when you least want it to ..

If your friend is from Illinois, they could eventually suspend his drivers' license. If he's from out of state, his state may have a compact with Illinois to suspend his license there or they may not. In either case the city will eventually send a credit agency after him and enter a derogatory mark on his credit report.

In my opinion, better to pay up now than to wait until it doubles to $120.

according to dvm.org you license isn't suspended until you have accumulated more than 10 unpaid parking tickets.
Illinois Suspended Drivers License Information and Procedures - DMV Guide

Has anyone had to face collection agencies for unpaid parking tickets? How many tickets have to accumulate before they report it to collectors?
