I think you need to plan for $750-$850 without a car. If you have a car and want reserved parking add $100/mo.

I move here from St. Louis in 2007. I lived in the Central West End a few steps from Forest Park. I think you'll like Chicago.

Generally, I'd say that the northeast coast of Chicago would suit you well. Look at Uptown, Edgewater, and Roger's Park. Lakeview is quite nice but you'll probably have to pay more. These places are right on the train line and are reasonably safe.

Also, be aware that it is sometimes faster to take the bus on Lake Shore Drive to-and-from downtown from these areas than it is to take the train.

You will be able to find 1 bedroom's in decent areas for around $800 maybe even $700. $600 is next to impossible.

Another thing to consider is roommates. The more people you have paying rent the nicer the digs.

I've known of a bunch of people pooling their money and getting a great place. It's just not for everyone.

I had a few roommates once and had an affordable 2800 SF place with AC, lakeviews from the roof, full size washer/dryer etc.

Check out craigslist perhaps.
