I have been quite in a pretty heavy stress lately with works and other problems, and I think I really need to find somewhere just to get out for a day.

I like Madison with its State Street and the Union square... I am wondering if there are any places within 3 hours of driving from Chicago that I should visit besides Madison. I just want a place that is interesting enough, not too crowded (like Chicago), not too quite like most Parks. Pretty much something that can ease my mind away. Thanks guys. Indianapolis will be my last choice if I can't find anything more interesting, I have not been to Urbana/Champaign, Milwaukee, and such....

A nearly completely intact downtown of a river town. Many of the buildings are representative of buildings that existed in Chicago that have since been torn down. I imagine Main Street is similar to what the parts of Clark St,Lincoln Ave,and other streets looked like at one time.

One of U.S.Grant's homes is there...

Thank you, a quick search gave some nice pictures... I guess 3 hour driving is good enough.

Milwaukee is nice too. The downtown has a "mini- Chicago" feel to it. Pfister Hotel is sorta neat, like the Drake. Art Museum is nice.

If want to do a nice spa or golf or nature or historic manufacturing or bathroom remodeling trip the American Club in Kohler is neat.

Heartland Spa in Gilman is kinda of nice place too.

Galena is pure escapism. First you feel you are a million miles from Chicago because the hills are real. In town, while the streets aren't grided, there are still are straight aways who grades very much like what you find in parts of San Francisco.

And secondly, the town freeze framed in time as virtually nothing was either torn down or built after the mining industry died around the 1840s.

***

also, Harbor Country along Lk Michigan in southeast Michigan, starting at the Indiana state line and reaching up north to Saugatauck.

You do cut off a lot of great places with your 3 hour limit, such as Door Co, Mackinack, and Brown Co (Ind).

I'd add the Mitchell Park Domes and the warehouse district south of downtown in the Old Third Ward. There are also some really nice outdoor dining opportunities at restaurants along the Milw River. And, when on schedule, a Cubs-Brewers game is a lot of fun at Miller Park, with the Cubs often having the home team edge. I'm not much into gambling, but if one is, Pottawatomi Casino is arguably the best in the entire extended Chicago region and comes closest to the feel of a real large and major casino because, well, it is.

Speaking of Wisconsin, I'm surprised nobody mentioned Lake Geneva.

Yeah, I do know that I cut myself off a lot of things with that 3 hour driving. It's because just want a day trip, and thus don't want to spend more than 6 hours for driving (back and forth).
