You honestly think there were enough places with enough space to fit a couple million people in the heat wave of 1995?

Dang. **** got out of hand in this thread fast. Thanks for resurrecting it, Avenger

Luxury or not, before I got my window unit recently, those few nights that were 90 degrees a few weeks ago made it impossible to sleep. Why the heck would you want to soak the sheets in sweat?

I bet you really are happy you got that window unit now since there has been plenty more 80+ days with high humidity in the last two weeks.

Oh man, you have no idea. I have been running it at night quite a bit.

Now I'm debating whether or not to pick up another unit for my frontroom. So far I have been getting by with a small box fan and one of those oscillating units. It's not going so well.

^ I've ran my ever night the past month except two nights last week when it dropped into the 50's and I opened all my windows.

Say what you want....I like to sleep in an icebox. In winter I keep my heat at 58 degrees while I sleep, and 63 when I'm at home.

Man, I hear you. A NYT article reported studies that say 60 - 68 F is optimal for sleeping. When my stuffy apartment is around 85 degrees, there is no way I can sleep.

Wow, I wonder what people did for those centuries before air conditioning?

I love it. No AC in the new place. We have a couple fans set up to circulate, but I feel a tone healthier than when we had central air. Better for my lungs/asthma/allergies and general health.

I second that!

It's one thing to sweat and be uncomfortable when I'm working (on jewelry at home), but don't mess with my sleep. I keep the house as cold as I can, within reason, all year. To me it is easily worth the extra money to be comfortable.

I'd get another one. Actually, I'm about to get another one. I moved to a new apt. on the 1st, but didn't get a window unit until yesterday. Talk about relief, I can finally sleep well in my new place. But the living room is still pretty toasty during the day, so I plan to get a 2nd unit. I have my brother coming in from out of town and I'd probably be in trouble if I let him melt.
