Hi all. Libertyville native here... planning to move back to Chicagoland area in the next 6 mos. or so. We live near Nashville now... and just miss being close to our families and friends. My question is this: do we look in the suburbs? Or check out the city? We aren't sure where we'll be working yet (city vs. suburbs). It's likely one or both of us will be in the city... but don't want too far of a train ride (45 min. tops!!). We can afford something up to about $300K. We do plan on having kids soon and we currently have 2 dogs and a cat. Please give me some opinions on this... suggestions of places (suburbs, Chicago neighborhoods) would be greatly appreciated!

G'day! Im an ex TN dweller (Clarksville--yuck!) too.

I suggest the far western suburbs, theyre excellent, some of the best in the nation. Here are some that I enjoy immesely. A quick search on these towns should net you all the info you want.

Bartlett, South Elgin, Wayne, Wheaton, Naperville, Geneva, St. Charles, Wasco, Lisle, Downers Grove, Oak Park, Elmhurst, Lake Forest (north), Barrington, Warrenville, Winfield, Hinsdale, Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Elburn, Plainfield. There are lots more that are superb, but my brain isnt working to its full potential today (Stanley Cup playoffs are in full swing).

Without knowing where you will be working its hard to give useful advice. We could describe some lovely neighborhoods and then you find out they are a two hour commute to your job(s). Expressway traffic here is bad (probably worse than when you lived here last), and the CTA seems to be falling apart.

If you know that you'll be working in the Loop, obviously your transit options will be much greater than if you're working in Lincoln Park or Schaumburg.

I am no help to you, because I am moving up to Chicago too. But i'm poor and single, hah.

Just wanted to say I live in Mule Town/Columbia. I had to drive an hour to Nashville to work (yay for Spring Hill ). I'm just looking forward to not driving anymore.

Anyway, good luck to you!!
