Does something need to be done in PARTS of the southside? Yes! Declaring state of emergency? No!

Over the last two decades the crime rate on the south side has actually improved, and without a "state of emergency," whatever that entails.

Wouldn't it make far more sense to declare the United States a state of emergency? Didn't the United States create the Detroit's and the southsides of today? And in callously allowing the deteriorization of some ares so that the "right people" can escape the decline, didn't we destroy the nation in the process.

In a nation of escape to the suburbs, escape to the sunbelt, escape to the safety of non-metropolitan settings, it seems the only ones we are running from are ourselves. And we catch up.

New York likes to think of itself as The Greatest City On Earth and has relied on a strong dose of American power and hubris to make that claim. Little does New York (or Chicago or LA, for that matter) realize how diminished each is as city due to the plight of Detroit.

We're all in this together. The sooner we realize that the problems of Detroit or the South Side of Chicago is everybody's problem, the better off we'll be.

Well honestly since the 90's the number of murders in Chicago has gone down by roughly 53%, so I suppose if they were going to call it a disaster zone - it would have been 15 years ago.

PARTS of the southside are bad, but certainly not ALL. They really need to crack down on the little things - hardcore. Force a little respect into the air and start at least bringing the term "responsibility" into play in those neighborhoods.

I agree with the sentiment that something must be done, but that declaring a state of emergency is a bit extreme- especially considering the reduction in crime rates since the 1990s.

Hyde Park for one, is on the south side and I don't think qualifies.

Aren't the "bad parts" of the South Side equivalent to those on the West Side?
