Not to mention isn't socialism more of an economic system rather than a political system (see Scandinavia - economically socialist, politically democratic).

I am friends with more than a few socialists who would take strong issue with the notion they are communists.

While it is completely reasonable to disagree with various economic and political theories (and I acknowledge I am much more liberal than you are), let's try to keep them straight.

The social democrats main goal is to institute socialism by integrating it into a capitalistic society gradually. The completion of their end goal does not happen overnight. It is called the "Third Way."

Yes, the end goal of those who are socialists would be to advance socialism rather than capitalism. However, let's not confuse either with democracy.

There were some like that in pre-revolution and post-revolution Russia as well. The problem is once the ball rolls down the hill it cannot be stopped. The conversion to a entirely socialistic political system opens up the back door for totalitarian communist or fascist rule.

The socialists of today in the U.S.A. are attempting to force the country into "The Dictatorship of the Proleteriat" which of course will be the precursor to the totalitarian communist state.

socialist political system? I'm referring to socialism as an economic system, not a political system (e.g. Scandinavia)

The socialistic political system comes after introducing it into an economic system.

Is it even possible to radically gradually overthrow a system. The concept is at odds with itself. Radical is never gradual and Communists are revolutionists. A gradual revolution, hmmm.
