you want some really juicy and flavorful gyros, try out the gyro place on La Salle and Division. And to top that off, they have two for $8, they're pretty filling and the most flavorful I have had

It's true, though. The first gyro I ever had was in Portland, Oregon during a Greek festival and the meat was all whole pieces cooked on a spit together like would actually be done in Greece or that neck of the world. And that gyro was still the best I've ever had - I loved it, but the "gyros" made from the "pre-fab meat cones" are just like comparing Velveeta to a nice Irish cheddar. There's just no comparison.

Are there any real gyros in Chicago?

Has anyone mentioned that ALL GYROS TASTE THE SAME AS THEY ALL FROZEN MEATS ON A STICK?

So Gyros uses processed meat, so what's the big deal? All your hot dogs and sausages are processed meat too. Do you expect Dick Portillo to hand stuff every casing? Would that satisfy the food snobs?

Kronos makes a damn tasty product. So much so that they have wiped out their competition.

Recognizing there is a difference isn't being a snob.

Kronos wiped out the competition due to ease of use and cost, not quality or flavor.

If Kronos is not good, why are they thriving and why do so many people devour their product? Greek-Americans seem to love the stuff and I don't think it is because they are too busy or cheap to stack a spit with their own blend of meats.

After eating these things for 35+ years, I don't ever remember being upset with the quality of meat, except when it was overcooked and too crispy.

Crappy tzatziki, cardboard pita and overpowering onions have led to disappointing gyros in the past, but I seldom left a shred of meat behind.

A new joint called Pita Heaven on Michigan between 12th and 13th has as good a gyros as I've had. They do the bread nice and greasy and give a generous portion of meat. I like it well done and crispy (so crispy I busted one of my ancient teeth on their gyros a couple of weeks ago ). They also have excellent kettle chips or Greek seasoned spuds to go with it; the chips soften up a little from being near the gyros and are really, really good.

Alos other good Greek food like spinach pie, Greek chicken and such.

Geez, man, saying they're not the best is not the same as saying they're not good. You seem to have an unwarranted, pressed-meat-cone-sized chip on your shoulder for some unknown reason. Calm down.

I have a secret love of those cheap Totino's pizzas, which sells millions every year but I would never try to argue that they're the pinnacle of pizza or that there aren't better pizzas out there, too.

If you know of a place that makes their own gyro meat stacks from actual pieces of meat then please share. Otherwise calm down and quit acting like a child.

I once cracked open my dental work, by biting into a dinner roll. Thats right a piece of bread. A piece of bread that cost me $225. Twin Gyros on Harlem at Lawrence serves up a nice soggy one.
