If you replace "gyro" with "shawarma" (since they're basically the same thing in different languages), then yes, there are plenty of places serving fresh gyros. Go up by Lawrence and Kedzie, cover your eyes, spin around 3 times, point your finger outward, open your eyes, and walk into the building you're pointing at. There will probably be fresh shawarma somewhere in that building.

Well, you compared it to Velveeta and then implied that it is not real gyros. Does that mean it's good? Or don't you read your own posts?

I'm just posting in defense of all the proud and stoic Greek restauranteurs who take pride in this popular and prolific sandwich. Nobody appreciates being appreciated as much as a Greek cook. Compliment him on his gyros and the next time you show up he'll load that pita with more meat than the last time.
