Yesterday 11-digit dialing began in Chicago, so that we all must dial a "1" and the area code before every phone call--even if it's in your same area code. Is anyone else finding this cumbersome and annoying already? It was bad enough to have two area codes in the city, but now there are three along with this 11-digit crap. Progress Schmogress I say! Humbug!

Lol!

I haven't had a problem. My number is 708 anyway, so I'm used to it!

Oh, it wasn't always like that for you? We moved to the suburbs last year and were surprised that we had to dial 1-630 for all the local calls. We haven't used 7-digit numbers since we got here. You just get used to it.

I always dial the area code anyways, so I don't even notice.

I know you just get used to it, but I do not understand why they create overlays like 872 and 312, or 224 and 847 out in the suburbs, when they could just split up the district in two like they did in the past. 312 used to cover all Chicago, and then they split it up into 312 and 773. Same with the suburbs, they were all 708, split into 708, 847, and 630. None of these moves required 11-digit dialing and overlays. The area codes should just be redistricted so those that want to dial 7 digits can do so.

Yeah, it is baffling. What's nutty is that the 420 prefix (1-630-420-xxxx) includes the Naperville schools and all their staff, the city departments including utilities, and some unrelated numbers like my insurance agent and the little market around the corner. I'm just surprised that they have enough numbers to go around. There seems to be plenty of numbers, so I'm not sure why the overlay is necessary.
