Here are some of the things that are most important to me:

Near to a Metra line, UPN that goes north, so basically Evanston, Ravenswood, or Clybourn.

Near to Good Music: In my case, Punk, Rock, Hip Hop scene.

Would like affordable rent. Can afford more, but not really high maintenance, $600-900/month

Near shopping, el, gym.

Ok, well thats it. If anyone has any ideas would love to hear them.

Thanks.

I don't see how anyone can help you with this limited amount of information.

Uptown? Then you can take the bus to the Ravenswood metra station. There are two nice sized ballrooms near Broadway and Lawrence that host local and national acts and it is on the red line for quick accessibility to other bars/venues.

There are easily rents in your price range. You could even get a two bedroom or 1+ office for $900.

I would not live east of Clark on Wilson though. Look north of Lawrence or south of Montrose if you want to be close to the lake. Otherwise west of Clark on Wilson is nice and shortly becomes Ravenswood. Prices in that section will be higher but it will put you closer to the Metra.

I used to recommend parts of Sheridan Park and Margate Park in Uptown in addition to Buena Park and the area near Andersonville. But the stalled real estate market has sort of let the current state of things gel after a period of rapid change, and I've had time to reflect on Uptown as it actually exists today. My recommendation now for a minimum of Uptown-style disturbances is to stay in Buena Park (south of Montrose) or in Andersonville Terrace (the northwestern-most section of Uptown that most people think of as an extension of Andersonville). Or stay west in Sheridan Park near the Ravenswood border. Margate Park is nice, but is too small of an enclave to make up for the humungous nursing home for crazy felons on its border. And Sheridan Park still has a smattering of low-income complexes, rehab centers, and halfway houses--and this does cause the quality of life to suffer there in spite of the beautiful streetscape and great housing stock.
