Apt. People for one day and our own finds on craigslist one day.

The current Albany Park apartment was a bit more difficult. While we did search extensively online (craigslist and such) we only had a couple of days to actually look in Chicago.

I also think you were on to something when you mentioned how different the rental market has become in the past couple of years.
Sounds like the Rogers Park one was good. It's interesting how listing vary from source to source. I started out using Chicago Reader when looking to move here, and I ended up finding the best stuff (for me) on rent.com.
There are so many places too for criteria here sometimes it's hard to find what you're looking for because it's buried down 30 pages.

Some of the stuff on craigslist is interesting too. I do like the condo for rent listings. My ex's friend had a nice gold coast studio for under $1000/month through it.

But I do have an idea of the layout of your apartment. Let's see... I believe it's "575 sq. ft attic, 1 bath, 1 bedroom, A shaped ceiling so much of the square footage is not usable." And I don't really care about its condition. Even if it's the most immaculate apartment in the history of real estate, there's no way in hell I'd pay $850/mo for a place as you describe it, least of all in Albany Park.

You used it as a basis of comparison of rental rates between two cities, so in that situation it's kind of important to note an unusual factor that affects its price.

Good for you. Just because you would not =/= I was ripped off.

Theres a good chance I would not take the apt you mentioned that was 1000 sq. ft as Id imagine the landlord goes with the 'if it looks ugly paint it white' rule as so many landlords seem to go with. I'd consider living somewhere that has not been well maintained to be a rip off. But hey, that's just me.

I suppose if you believe the universe of options is to overpay for a well-maintained shoebox or live in an poorly maintained building, the former option might well be the more attractive one. And unfortunately it sounds like that was your universe of options under the circumstances. But $850/mo for a 575sqft attic apartment in Albany Park is, frankly, outrageous.
