I moved to the Chicago 'burbs from Alabama last year, and as much as I love the food here, I'm craving some good old-fashioned southern cookin'! any suggestions?

Check here:

LTHForum.com • View topic - Chicago's best soul food?

As always, call to make sure the place is still in business, as the restaurant market here is tough.

One that's not on that list is Dixie Kitchen & Bait Shop in Evanston and Lansing. They used to have a Hyde Park location that Obama liked but it closed earlier in the year.

Check the LTH Forum as they have extensive threads on a number of soul food and southern cooking places.

Personally, my favorite is Chuck's Southern Comfort Cafe in Burbank. Chuck makes great Cajun food and good BBQ.

BJs Market and Bakery serves a nice variety of southern specialties. However, their mustard catfish is outstanding.

Mrs. Johnsons on S 83rd and Ashland is a good "hole in the wall".

One warning. I am a southerner at heart and travel through the small towns of Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee and Alabama. I am used to paying $5-10 for "meat and threes". You will pay double that in Chicago.

The one in Lansing is good, but a decent clip outside of "Chicago-Central".

As stated in the other thread, Wishbone is great Louisiana/southern style food.

Wishbone is in Berwyn on Roosevelt. After dinner you can always go to Fitzgeralds and listen to a band and make a night out of it. (They specialize in a lot of American roots music).

Cracker Barrell. They even have grits and sweet tea.

although, with the great food in the city, I am at a loss why you would want anything else.

Prpbably because grits and sweet tea to a southern boy is what pizza and beer is to a Chicago boy.
