I'm a 29 y.o. male moving to Chicago w/ in the next month from Bloomington, IN. THE BAD: Four years ago my ex-roommate and I were evicted from an apartment; we didn't give "proper" notice of vacancy on a 6 mos. lease and we moved out. I wasn't served w/ eviction or civil hearing papers and my ex-roommate left me out to dry. Nonetheless, I paid everything off (no help from the roomie...but, I'm not bitter. ha.) THE GOOD: I'm not a bum, I have decent credit (685-700), money for a year lease up front, and allot of references from apartment owners and mngrs. THE BOTTOM LINE: I need an apartment and some advice from someone in the windy city that has been in my situation or insight from an apartment owner/mngr. that has dealt w/ people in my predicament. Thank you.

If you were not served with eviction or civil hearing papers what are you worried about? You have nothing on your record.

Yes, Pull your credit report and see if there's anything in the "Public Record" or Derogatory Information sections ..with the score you say you have, I seriously doubt it ... You should be OK ...

Money talks. Don't mention Indiana and do pay 6 months in advance. Don't be surprised if they want to check your credit -- which delays getting into an apartment. You may also need to pay for a deposit on utilities, cable, phone, internet, plus parking stickers and parking lots, Chicago XYZ fees, Toll Pass, bus pas or train pass or all three (although i can't imagine why), IL drivers license, IL license plates and stickers. The incidentals may well cost an extra $200 per month you did not plan for - and most of this has to be paid for within the first 30 days. Note: It will cost close to this if you can rent a private garage.

The next question has to do with where you work. If you don't work at home, the job generally dicatates where you will live.. And where you live dictates whether or not you even need a car.

If you don't have a job, but you have a degree it might help, but personally I would not count on teh future too much right now.
