Hello forum. I'll be heading to Chicago and will be spending the second week of January in the Schiller Park area (about 10 miles from O'Hare).

Coming from the Bahamas, I'm completely oblivious as to what to wear.

1)How should I be prepared (I've hear that I should wear thermal undies).
2)How's the food/shopping in the area?
2)Is that area (60176) relatively safe?

thanks...

First, you will need to buy a warm winter coat, hat & gloves. (try Lands' End | Swimwear, Outerwear, Casual Clothing and more or similar companies) Then, thermal undies would not be out of the question if you plan to walk about much.
Certainly, warm slacks & sweaters will be needed.

Secondly, everything is pretty close in the Chicago area, so, you are bound to find something to eat make sure to try the Chicago classics, hot dog, pizza & Italian beef.

have fun!

Thanks!...

How's public transportation in that area (safety...24/7)? I assume that most terminals will be outdoor platforms, correct?

you wanna switch places? I'm not in Schiller Park, but I'll loan you my CTA pass if I can stay at your place in the Bahamas for a week!

on a serious note, most of the L platforms are outside (though parts of the blue and red line do go underground), but on the bright side, many on the stops have heated shelters that work quite well (assuming you can find a spot to stand in there!). if you have access to a computer w/ internet, I would make good use of the CTA's bus tracker system so you're not standing outside waiting for a bus for 20+ minutes.

I've never owned long underwear, though every year I debate buying some. I would invest in some good boots, preferably water resistant since you'll likely be walking through some slush. not sure if it would be cheaper to buy these in the States (do you have a layover?) or in the Bahamas
