Yes. I am a HUGE Steeler fan and Penguin fan! I figured there would be a few Steeler bars in Chicago. So everyone agrees that the River North is the best place to live in our situation? I just want to make sure my wife will be relatively safe when shes going to and from work alone.

I would look into Streeterville,Gold Coast, and Near North as well. River North is not all that "artsy" anymore. It is a bit more "artsy" than the other places I mentioned, but it really is no more trendy than the other areas.

Plus, in River North you have to deal with schlock tourist "attractions" and gaudy constructed buildings such as Hard Rock Cafe,Rainforest Cafe,etc...

The use of land has been so poorly planned in the area where those establishments are (in the last 20 years or so) you almost feel like you are in L.A.

But then again, you might like it.

I advise to come here and check out the neighborhoods before you make a decision.

Not everyone necessarily agrees. I'll ask again, if you could live in any Pittsburgh neighborhood what would it be and why?

There is "artsy" in the hipster sense, "artsy" in the "good way to run a business sense", "artsy" in the actual studio of sculpture / painter sense and probably a whole more ... River North still has LOTS OF actual galleries that represent working artists, a handful of whom still do live in the area, but it is too expensive for those who need BIG working spaces and not nearly funky enough anymore to inspire the really young edgy types. When it comes to some one relocating and concerned with safety though such traits would seem hard to beat...

I think it is bit harsh to say it is either "LA like" as the big McDonalds, RF Cafe, and Hard Rock are all clustered in one lump that really does not spill over more than a few blocks -- easy enough to "avert your eyes" when walking past. Actual number of tourists over there is pretty small too -- more kids looking for a 'familiar" entry to the City and/or their non-adventurous chaperones...

Values in rentals and even purchase of condos is hard to ignore -- overbuilding means money is going farther than ever.

Truth is often harsh.

Gaudy is Gaudy.

There is no way around it.

And if the OP is going to live in River North and work near Olive Park, he is going to have to pass through that area every day that he goes to work.

I would live in Shadyside. Great food, shops, and parks. close to downtown too.

Hmm.. Yeah, then River North might well be your place. It's a lot denser than Shadyside though. More expensive too. You might also consider Lincoln Park.

You know those little Marie Antoinette style hand held masks? You could make something like that out of say the Farnsworth house (lord know they could use the money...) out of appropriately sized see-through plastic and hold over ones eyes while walking to near the monstrosities...

As revolting as that area may be, it's only a few square blocks and hardly defines the entire neighborhood. There are plenty of off-the-beaten-path areas in River North, particularly west of LaSalle.

Of course it does not define the entire neighborhood completely, but it does give off a less than desired impression. (For many people.)

But like I said earlier, the OP will have to be reminded of its insulting cheesy nature everyday on his way to work.

I would much rather pass through an area filled with porn shops, bars, and strip clubs than through Disneyland restaurant and bar fare.

I would have been very happy in the Chicago of old up until the early 80's. Man I wish I was older and could have lived through that stuff.
