Hi, I'm looking to purchase a getaway cottage in the countryside (not suburbs), in a beautiful natural setting preferably nearby Lake Michigan (within 30 minutes drive or so). The closer to Lake Michigan, the better. I'm currently in Chicago, so it would need to be within reasonable driving distance to the city also (within 2 hours give or take). I'm new to the area, so I'm open to all options including Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. I know its a broad range, but anyhow, I'd love to hear all suggestions, and thanks in advance!

Northwest Indiana or Southwest Michigan. Most places in Wisconsin might be too far away. Try Sagatuck, New Buffalo, places like that.

We're in the northern part of Chicago around Uptown.

Then Wisconsin is your better bet. Try up around Sheboygan,

You still haven't given an approximate price range.

I'd like to look under 200k, closer to 100k actually - nothing fancy. something that could be a weekend project, fixing up and getting it into shape over time.

I've done a little research on Saugatuck, MI and Sheboygan, WI, (and the surrounding towns) and they both sound great. How would you guys compare the 2 areas, in terms of natural beauty, weather, friendliness and openness of people, good food, etc? Thanks for your responses!
