I moved here from DC in 2004, based on what you described I'd say check out Wicker Park (like Adams Morgan), Logan Square (think U Street/Cardozo), UK Village and West Town (I dunno...maybe like Columbia Heights) - trying my best to draw comparisons to DC hoods based on character and overall culture, but not necessarily geography or ethnic culture.

Thank you WildCat, that was very helpful. Wicker Park,Lakeview and Logan Square are the top three places I am currently looking in.

All things being equal, to anyone under 30 who is moving to Chicago, I would highly recommend Central Lakeview as a really great place to start in the city - Belmont el will take you anywhere you want, although you're already close to everything and there's a little something for everyone. Logan is ok but still sort of up-and-coming, Wicker Park is also great but a bit further removed from other fun neighborhoods.
