There are tens of thousands of folks over 50 living in Lincoln Park, it is a MYTH perpetuated by the folks that run bars and shops that LP is some kind of "after college only" kind of neighborhood. The shear expense of many of the housing options AND the relative lack of high paying jobs that are available to recent college grads combine to make A REALITY that Lincoln Park has a large portion of not-so-young residents.

The OP is wise to considering living WALKING DISTANCE from work and Lincoln Park is SMARTEST area for some one in their situation to consider. There are an ABUNDANCE of sections that have many options for shopping, dining and entertainment that will make the OP feel very much part of the mainstream in Lincoln Park.

Good Luck!

When I lived in Lincoln Park my neighbors included an executive from Crate and Barrel, a partner from Arthur Anderson (that dates this a bit), a financial analyst who was often on CNN, the elderly son of Dr. Spock, and a guy who bought up struggling hospitals. I'd say the average age on our block, not including the school-age children of homeowners, was about 45. There were only three rental buildings on the block at that time (including ours), and ours was torn down to make way for a mansion and another one was converted to condos. It was quite far from a post-college frat party, though McGee's was not that far away.

I think Andersonville would be perfect. Slightly older more progressive crowd, racial and sexual diversity, and somewhat safe. Tons of shops, restaurants, etc. Hop on the red line to Fullerton to get to work.

The OP wants to WALK TO WORK. That would not be possible from Andersonville...

He did mention that the CTA might be part of his commute. So Andersonville might be a good choice in that respect.

The social scene is a bit more "grown up" there, though I'd say is skews towards 30-somethings--which is still quite a bit younger than the OP. Basically, there are no parts of the city where the night life centers around 50-somethings.

I think Lakeview, Andersonville, Roscoe Village and North Center are all worth checking out. All are nice areas that are fairly diverse. Depending on where you work in Lincoln Park you should be able to either walk or use public transit from any of those neighborhoods. Old Town could be worth investigating as well.

I wouldn't consider Oak Park, it's a great area, but REALLY far from Lincoln Park. You'd be spending close to an hour on the L each way.
