We'll be visiting Chicago with our preschool aged child and toddler this spring/summer. Can you recommend kid-friendly activities/outings? Thanks!

A set of markers and the Art Institute!!

No, but in all seriousness, there is a nice Children's Museum at Navy Pier.
Plus, Lincoln Park Zoo is free and enjoyed by all children.

Millennium Park. Kids love the Bean and the Fountain.

I second everything above. Another idea if you want to get a slice of chicago life outside of the main tourist zones -- bring the kids to sweet mandy b's (unbelievable local cupcake joint) in lincoln park (webster), take the cupcakes across the street, watch them make a mess and play in the very nice playground while you kind of soak in chicago neighborhood life. John's Place on corner is also a good spot for a family friendly meal.

Just a random idea if you also want to see a living neighborhood with relatively few tourists.

I believe there is also a free kids area in the modern wing of the art institute. I cannot personally confirm this, as kids are loud and sticky.

Here are a few more suggestions:

Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum – it’s near the Lincoln Park Zoo and has hands-on activities for kids.

Museum of Science and Industry has some exhibits suitable for preschoolers/toddlers. My 2 ½ year old loves the trains and the big pinball, among others.

The Field Museum now has a play lab for kids:
Crown Family Playlab (http://www.fieldmuseum.org/playlab/highlights_1.asp - broken link)

Rent bikes and ride on the Lake Shore bike path. It’s beautiful ride, but avoid a weekend ride if possible. Too crowded.

If you want to go a bit farther afield one day, I’d also suggest a picnic/day at the beach in Evanston. The lakefront parks are beautiful and shady, have picnic tables and playground areas. The beaches are filled with families and little kids. Our favorites with the kiddo are Lighthouse Beach and the beaches by Burnham Shores Park.

I see that the Shedd Aquarium hasn't been mentioned yet, but it's kind of an obvious one. My girls love the penguins. But Lincoln Park Zoo is definitely cheaper (i.e. free, but with expensive food and parking).
