I live in Jefferson Park (statistically one of the safer community areas in the city) and have recently been hearing a lot of loud bangs close-by at night. I haven't heard a live gunshot in a long time, so I don't know if this is shooting or just fireworks. Either way, they're both illegal and frankly, quite disruptive.

I'm less inclined to believe these are gunshots, because I never read anything about it in the paper the next day. But it seems like anything else that could cause that loud of a noise should rouse the attention of the authorities.

Has anyone else heard similar sounds or have any clue as to what they might be?

Yep, just heard it too. This has been going on every now and then for a couple years now. It's definitely not gunfire, it's way too deep and loud for that. Even a 12-gauge doesn't sound that "big." I don't know if it's fireworks or what, but it's annoying.

Apparently, they are fireworks. Did a quick search last night and apparently this is commonplace for neighborhoods across the city leading up to Fourth of July. Kids or whoever will just be setting off fireworks nearly every night. Kinda strange that the City hasn't bothered to crack down on this.

Do you live near train tracks? Coupling and uncoupling of freight cars?

Except this happens year-round. So it may be fireworks but it's not just a 4th of July thing.

That's definitely not it. This is loud like municipal fireworks loud. Like, those bright flash-bang fireworks whose only purpose is to make a big loud boom.

Here in Humboldt Park, we hear them year round, but they really ramp up around the time of Cinco de Mayo and Puerto Rican Fest and beyond 4th of July. It seem that the Latino residents here just really really love fireworks. Maybe its a cultural thing.

quigboto, you speak the truth. I've spent a couple of July 4th's on a Humboldt Park rooftop, and I thought I was going to die. It felt like the Battle of Britain.

Isn't the Northwest Side a haven for cops and firemen? This might explain the fireworks..

I hear random bangs from my place in Gold Coast and never know what it is. I'm up fairly high so who knows where it's actually from..
