Hi, all. Lurker-turned-poster with a question for anyone who might be willing to give an answer...

In the fall, I'm planning on moving to Chicago for school. I'm going to be starting at the Art Institute of Chicago, at their campus in the Loop. They offer student housing but it is restrictively expensive. I was looking at other apartments around town, but as I've only been there a few times in the past for university visits, I'm still not that familiar with the area. My family isn't that keen on this moving decision, but my mother said she was willing to help me move on the stipulation that I find a decently safe place to live.

That said, I did find a few apartment buildings in Hyde Park that don't seem soul crushingly expensive. So I guess my question is... how far IS Hyde Park from the Loop, via trains or foot or bus or whatever? Does anyone have any other suggestions for areas to look into? I checked apartments in the Loop itself and those are prohibitively expensive. Any other ideas?

Help a new girl out?

Honestly? I'm just looking for a little studio apartment. Anything more than 600/month seems a little insane, broke art student and all...

Well 600 can get you a place on the north side if you look hard enough.

A few questions:

SAIC is not affiliated with any other "school" -- SAIC - School of the Art Institute of Chicago

It is important to not confuse the housing options that you would have there with those that might offered by the for profit company that runs these places that have locations around the country including Tampa and Chicago: Art, Fashion Design, Culinary Arts Schools - The Art Institutes I would discourage any one from spending any money with them...

Their location is downtown / River North and has very good access to the public transportation.
350 N. Orleans Street, Chicago, IL 60654-1593 You would regret living in Hyde Park and would do much better looking for a place near DePaul's Lincoln Park campus or anyplace else in the general vicinity including all the popular youth oriented north side areas.

Pilsen. I think about a third of the kids who go to the various art schools downtown live in Pilsen.
