I personally have been mugged once because I was stupid and
was walking around late at night by myself.
I learned not to do that. Sure I was a bit a recluse for awhile
and was paranoid. I am much more careful now.
But I aint moving anywhere because of some thugs.

Thats city data forum for you.
Heavily concentrated on crime.
Most threads are on crime and where it is and where not to live to avoid it.
If you want different items to discuss there is skyscrapercity forum
and skycraper page forum.
Its the summer too so that skews the conversation to crime, which
alway is more rampant during this time.
Sure there are other thread topics, but this will dominate till it cools off.

I think it also tells you that in general there are alot of us in chicago
that are fed up with crime. It is getting better.
There are also alot of people who want to focus on the negative
and think that neigborhoods cant better or who dont want to stick it out
in tough neigborhoods like uptown. Which believe or not is headed in the right direction.

uptown update is an excellent blog that tells news good and bad
about uptown

And I've been in this location for more than five years now.

Uptown is really a mixed bag. To be honest, there are only a few parts of the neighborhood I'd be comfortable living in--especially with the kids. But it really needs to be stated that there are parts of Uptown that are as nice as anything on the North Side. It's a big community area, and parts of it blend in seamlessly with adjacent neighborhoods. A large chunk of what people consider "Andersonville" is actually in Uptown, for instance. It's the central part of the neighborhood--with the bulk of the retail storefronts and the Uptown Theater--that is the most problematic area. Driving through, this is what people think of as "Uptown".
Most of uptown is ok - the majority of "Buena Park" is great ! Thanks to the Cemetery that 'corks' off the bad element.
That being said - Uptown has some serious issues - a quarter mile radius of Wilson Yards is where most of the problem lies.
Good riddance to Shiller !

And with a forward thinking alderman elect the answer to the question "when will uptown improve?" seems pretty obvious.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if whomever runs is able to squeak through by only pandering to the flop-house/drug addict/mental/homeless population.

Mary Ann Smith is not going to run again either. Looks like both are running from Uptown like rats on a sinking ship.

Well they may be rats leaving a sinking ship
but they bit the holes into the ship causing it to sink.

Now we need some new blood in there
to plug the holes in.

This is the best thing that could happen to uptown
