So I'm starting graduate school at Loyola this fall and just visited apartments in the city this weekend. I found a really nice one in Rogers park, right by the lake located at 1110 W. Columbia Ave. The closest train stop would be Loyola. Am I an idiot to sign this lease? (as I am a 5'6" 100 lb female with little to no self defense skills)

I do not think it is completely stupid to live there because you are right across from campus. However,I would use extreme caution at night around there. If you are not confident that you could defend yourself you may be better off living in another area like Andersonville which is far less sketchy.

Do you plan having a car?

I would shoot for Andersonville and take Red Line up.

I just did a CLEARmap check for any recent criminal activity, and it seems OK for the most part in the super immediate area. However, avoid the Morse stop. It looks like there is constantly shady stuff going on over there.

If the crime reports are any indication, you'll have to watch out for robberies and Larceny. Get yourself some pepper spray to be on the safe side.

come on, rogers park isn't that bad, though probably not the best if you aren't used to urban life...nor would i call it a "new to the city" hood... i would def carry the pepper spray if i was a girl, but that goes to any girl by herself. and she is kina tiny with no bo staff skills or nunchuck skills

You're definitely right. It's all in perspective, and although the numbers don't lie, things might not feel that unsafe. My neighborhood has its fair share of crime but I don't perceive it as unsafe. Granted, I'm usually in by 8:30 PM and out the door for work at 6:45A. I wouldn't really hesitate to live where she is looking.
