15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”

22 And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”
So why didn't God command Adam & Eve not to eat from the Tree of Life as well as the Knowledge of Good & Evil, and what would have happened if they had eaten from the Tree of Life before they sinned?
He didn't need to command not to eat from the tree of life because death happens only to those who are not perfect\holy ........if they had not chosen to disobey, they would have lived spiritually eternally as well as physically.
Do you think God wants to be around sinful humanity forever and ever as we commit sin and thumb our nose at Him?
Look at life before the flood. God was sorry that He had made man on the earth. If Adam would have eaten the Tree of Life, then He would have to deal with them forever. Why would He want that?

He respected their free will choice... even though He didn't approve of it.
God prevented reentry into the Garden of Eden so that man would not have to live forever in this fallen state.i.e.-God blocked eternal life in our present condition,so we would not have to live with faulty genes and chromosomes,or rather, disease states and conditions, birth defects, etc. This is why God limits us to the general time frame of '70-80 years',so that we don't have to suffer forever.and just as that time frame is limited,so are our days in this present, fallen state.

Somewhere, it mentions a max life span of 120 years.

The church would be out of business, because there would be no one to condemn.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemnedalready because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
We are great at condemning the condemned. Something Jesus never did.Neither do I condemn you.

They were already immortal, so there was no need to eat from the tree of life. Or maybe they ate from it every day, but after they sinned they were not allowed to eat from the tree of life because they had been given the death sentence.
