I take that expression to mean that a person feels a connection to God. Sometimes a person will feel that way, even if they are not active in any particular church.

Some probably think that their relationship with God includes prayer/conversations with God, along with reading the Bible and trying to live their life in the way that they believe the Bible tells us to live, or the way they believe God wants us to live our lives.

Most of the time, I am one of those people that believe I have a personal relationship with God. Of course, I realize that my reasons for feeling that way, would earn the be label of "delusional" by some atheists. That's okay, they are entitled to their opinions.

I have not been to church in quite a long time, but I do "talk to God" almost every day. Sometimes several times a day. I read the Bible sometimes, not very often. I'd like to read it more, but I haven't pushed myself to do so. I do TRY to live a life that God would be proud of. I've made my mistakes along the way and will probably continue to do so. For those times, I ask for/pray for Gods forgiveness.

I don't really live in "fear" of God. I do my best to do what's right and if God grants me entry, I will be forever grateful. If something I've done is deemed unforgivable, and I go to "the bad place", then well, I tried my best given the body and brains that the Lord gave me!

I am a little irreverent at times, but I do believe God forgives and I believe God might even have a sense of humor and might appreciate mine. I sure hope so! (sorry if that's random)

Actually, a personal, intimate relationship with the Living God, is similar in many respects to a real relationship with another person. It involves love, communication, dependence, truth and commitment.

For example, one may know all about the President, his family, his kids, dogs, political positions, etc., but, cannot truly say that they know (or are known by) the President. There is no real love, communication, dependence, truth or commitment in their 'knowledge.'

Similarly, many people know about God, the Bible, church, religion and philosophies regarding God; but, they do not truly have a personal relationship with Him (or He with them). There is no real love, communication, dependence, truth or commitment in their 'knowledge.'

Invariably, when people say, "I used to be a Christian, but,...." -- they mean that they attended church, gave lip-service to a belief in the Bible and claimed to be a Christian. Just as one does not stop loving their children, one, likewise, does not simply stop loving God.

If you want to have a true relationship with God, open your heart (not just your head) to Jesus Christ and ask Him to reveal Himself to you and give you the true joy, peace, love and truth that you seek. -- Without that, about the best you can do is 'religion', which is a poor substitute for 'relationship.'
Good post, trust in God, put your faith in Him, talk to Him about everything, ask Him to help you in all things, be totally dependent on Him, give Him thanks for all things, seek to lift Him up and glorify Him with your life, know that He is always there in all situations, live for Him, ask Him to help you change whatever it is that He wants you to change, grow in your relationship with Him, ask Him to show you more about Him as you communicate with Him and study His word, know that He is in control and that He loves you unconditionally. God bless.

God HAS established a spiritual union with us through Jesus Christ . . . and His Holy Spirit lives within our consciousness . . . whether or not you follow cxjonz's advice here.

Sounds like you have a personal relationship with the Living God to me . . . sure beats reading and revering words "written in ink" in an instruction book ABOUT God . . . as if they were God, IMO.
