In my case they are washed away when I take a shower. I don't try to wipe them off. I see many others in the train and in the city and I assume they are Catholic as I am. It is simply one of the beautiful traditions of the RCC.

I don't believe we are the only ones to give out ashes

We have done Taize prayer (don't know how to get that accent mark in there) in our Episcopal church, too, but not on AW.

Humility, I suppose.

Our AW service was at 7 p.m., so "the rest of the day" wasn't that long.

O, yeah, they aslo get wiped of when I take a shower too, of course.

In my former small town, the RCC is the only church that does the ashes. So it was even more special. And it is a good conversation-starter since so many non-Catholics ask me what they are and what they mean.

Last year we did something I think it was a Triduum service one night during lent, didn't really care for it.
During Lent on Fridays I go to 6pm Mass followed by a Stone Soup Supper and Discussion, there is a different guest speaker every week; soups and breads are very good, usually get a good size crowd.
