The Scribes and Pharisees were bible fearing believers who boasted they were Abraham's children and yet they rejected what the "Spirit of God' was saying through the man Christ Jesus. Sound familiar ?.

Now Jesus said "My sheep hear my voice", how come the bible fearing believing Scribes and Pharisees never heard is voice ?.

Why did they reject what was in their own bibles ?. Maybe the Christ that showed up wasn't the one they expected. After all he did not come with a voice speaking words that those who heard it begged to speak no more, or the sight of him was so fearful they were in fear and trembling, or if you touched him he burnt you(Does this sound like your Christ ?) Hebrews 12.

We so easily create false images based on what we know, and then apply them to the Almighty.

they never heard his voice because of their traditions. They had their carnal nature swelling up in their hearts and they were not going to let that go. they searched the scriptures thinking that in them was life. but he, Christ, was in their midst and they failed to see him. 2 things that get in the way of following God are our traditions and our emotions. Many do religious thing because it is tradition, and many do religious thing because of our emotions. It feels good.

True, our emotions (and carnal mind) are rooted in the soul realm. Since the Fall, we've lived our lives by our soulish attributes while the Spirit lays dormant. The soul keeps promoting the flesh (in everything from pride to lowering God to our level). The "tradition" goes all the way back to Adam.

On a related note, a common misconception is that at the moment of conversion, we switch from soulish living and the Spirit is made Lord - but it's a process of "dying daily" as Paul put it, being transformed by the renewing of the mind. That's why He told His followers to not bother unless they picked up their cross.

Hi pcamps,

You are taking Hebrews 12 completely out of context.

What is the point you are trying to make?

Do you think the Messiah's first coming and His second coming serve the same purpose?

Steph i am using Hebrews 12 to show that is not how Christ came and IS. If that is how he came and was, the Scribes and Pharisees those wonderful bible fearing believers would be queueing up to receive him.

Your fire and brimstone god will always be popular, because it takes faith to believe that is not who He IS.

...while the feel-good god of unconditional acceptance will continue his wild popularity because the only faith it takes to believe him is the dead variety.

What do you mean "if that is how he came and was"?? That is how He WILL come! And they will wish they could queue up to receive Him when He does!

"Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen." Rev 1:7

He came the first time to give His life as a ransom for many, not to judge the world in righteousness... that comes later.

No it takes faith to believe that God loves you at your worst and while you are STILL at your worst.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

The bible fearing believers like back then and like many today, find this ^^^^^ a hard one to swallow and the only answer they have to it, is to dimiss it as a feel good god. Well let me tell you this sister, everything about God feels good, even his chastisement(for it is for our good)
