Proverbs 29 v 2 "When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn."

What do you think of this verse as applies to modern times?

I believe as the leader goes, so goes the country, state, county, city...A righteous leader would lead the right way, a wicked leader would be deceiving.

The story in the book of Jonah clearly demonstrates this fact...When Ninevah was to be destroyed, God sent Jonah to preach and proclaim this event...but the king of Ninevah led the country in prayer to God, and the Lord heard, and answered their prayers (Jonah, Chapter 3). Praying leaders are good!

It's a wonderful proverb, that's for sure.

The Book of Jonah was a very anti-Nationalist book, and Jonah was extremely annoyed that his prophecy didn't come to pass. He was soon corrected over this matter, and reminded that God cares for all peoples, all nations - not just one special nation. What was extremely difficult for readers of the past to stomach was the thought that the city being spared was the past capital of the Assyrian Empire (the book is a late, and unhistorical book - the Assyrian Empire had long been gone by the time it was written) - the same Empire who destroyed the Northern Kingdom of Israel during the Divided Monarchy. Some readers must have wondered what might have happened if Yahweh had NOT spared Ninevah? Would Israel still be around? The idea of the unviersal God was a powerful one in this book - Jonah tried to leave the land of Israel to escape God's call (back in an age when Henotheism taught that a god only had power in his/her own country) and soon learned that God's reach extended througout the world. Jonah could not flee his responsibility.

Interesting trivia: Jonah was probably the only successful prophet heh heh!

As for righteous leaders and wicked rulers, another biblical book sums up the current state of affairs as allowed by God:
Therefore I say,
'Guiltless as well as wicked he [God] destroys'.

When the scourge slays suddenly,
He mocks the despair of the innocent.

Earth is given to the control of the wicked.
The faces of her judges he covers.
If not he, then who?

(Job 9:22b-24, AB)
God seems culpable for some of the world's perceived injustice, according to the Book of Job.

In the end - it was God's most righteous leaders who committed some of the greatest sins recorded in the Bible, and which caused them to lead their people to destruction. That's the problem with Corporate Responsibility (which includes the idea of a nation's people suffering because of one ruler's folly) - it is not Just. Ezekiel 18:20's "the soul that sins, he shall die" rejected this idea of a people suffering from their leaders' actions, and wished to find a new standard of Justice. The later idea of Original Sin would reverse Ezekiel's hopes.

At one time in our recent history, we had a national leader who I believe was/is very strong in his faith. His Administration was focused primarily on 'peace'. Even after his presidency his life is devoted to peace and caring for the poor/under-privileged.

However nearly every critic who compares presidential administrations, insists that his was among the worst administrations that our nation has had.

Our nation is ran by a group of sum 355 elected officials, plus Agencies of thousands bureaucrats. That one 'top' elected official can not turn the entire mass around.

If 99% of them are wicked, 1% can not cleanse them.

See if there is not righteous leader for the nation then as long as Christians are welcome in the Nation the nations will stand in the apostolic blessing from the Lord , when the leader remove the Christians from the land then a cycle of death will come on the nation.... See in the days when Jesus walked in Israel , He and other believers held the blessing from the Lord by their authority, as Caesar leadership was a tyrant .... So as long as there are Christians who pray and hold authority for America or other nations then these Nations will be blessed by the Lord , and the Lord will Not Remove His hand from these Nation which if He did remove His hand , it could bring a nation under a curse and only Jesus Christ can remove .... Even though a President can hand the nation over to the devil, as long as Christians live on the land and know how to pray in Faith the authority of Jesus Christ and His blood then They will have spiritual authority for the nation, so the devil will be thawed with prayer
