Thanks for posting. I didn't know Barnum was a Universalist. He says something that is attested to every day on this forum:
"Not a few are prejudiced against the Universalists because they have seen only a distortion or caricature of their belief. Many attacks taken to be against us have really been against only a wilful or ignorant parody of us."
Since the same posters continue to attack UR based on false representations of it over and over again, I find it hard to believe it is done out of ignorance, but rather is willful. I hope I'm wrong.
So many worthy points made in one article. I particularly appreciated this one:
"No Christian prays for endless sin and punishment. If God permits it, it must be good and right. Why not pray for it? All Christians pray for the salvation of sinners, and yet Orthodox Christians profess to believe it will never be."
Still universalism doctrines is a fallen form of belief , as there is a dwelling on hell which is not heard in people who have Jesus Holy Spirit .......... As people who have Holy Spirit has a comforter who will protect these people in their lives and the life to come , as Holy Spirit is a heavenly power of Christ.............. So do people who profess Universalism have a ongoing witness of the Living God through Jesus Holy Spirit or is it a form of godliness which is based on legalism ideas ?...........See Jesus waits for people of universalism belief to forsake the unbelief of Jesus authorship of salvation , and repent and turn to Jesus and his truths , as there is NO hell minded people In Christ, only heaven bound
It all comes down to yet another mistaken understanding of the nature of God, and the fallen nature of man. People can't understand that God is really that Holy, and they can't understand that they really are that bad.

I have yet to hear a Christian Universalist who does not proclaim that Jesus is the author of salvation. And "legalism" in Christian-ese has to do with earning God's favor in order to avoid eternal punishment and which denies the grace of God. Since UR's do not believe one needs to earn God's favor nor do they believe in eternal punishment, and since they believe that God's grace will save/heal all people, not just some, their beliefs are obviously not based on legalism.

I agree about the bolded. It does come down to our understanding of the nature of God ... Of course, I would argue that it is your understanding that is faulty, since it does not acknowledge the power of God's love, grace and mercy to effect the salvation of all from the bondage to sin/non-love. Your view of God's holiness is that God will allow sin to exist for eternity in hell, whereas the UR view acknowledges that God's holiness demands a full victory over sin.
I find Universalists incredible. The first quote sums it up.
