TEDxEastHampton - Joel Hoffman - Interpreting Language - YouTube

My own opinion on this is that it doesn't mean the bible is "wrong". It means that there is always more to learn. I also think it means that taking the bible literally, word-for-word, is not the best way to read it.

Sounds pretty valid. The entire purpose of the Bible IMHO is not to point to itself as the end all be all answer to everything. It's purpose is to point us to God.

This is where the real errors begin - one brick at a time.

Start taking the literal out of the Bible and it will totally become a subjective mess.

So, you stick to the "thou shalt not covet", even though that was not what the bible originally said?

Thou shalt not covet (you shall not desire) is a correct translation.

Covet - a strong inordinate desire to have something that belongs to someone else.

Exodus 20:17 You shall not covet (חָמַד - chamad-desire, lust, covet) your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

Origin of COVET

Middle English coveiten, from Anglo-French coveiter, from Vulgar Latin *cupidietare, from Latin cupiditat-, cupiditas desire, from cupidus desirous, from cupere to desire
First Known Use: 14th century
Covet - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary

THE GOLDEN RULE OF INTERPRETATION

The third rule of interpretation is as follows: WHEN THE PLAIN SENSE OF SCRIPTURE MAKES COMMON SENSE, SEEK NO OTHER SENSE; THEREFORE, TAKE EVERY WORD AT ITS PRIMARY, ORDINARY, USUAL, LITERAL MEANING UNLESS THE FACTS OF THE IMMEDIATE CONTEXT, STUDIED IN THE LIGHT OF RELATED PASSAGES AND AXIOMATIC AND FUNDAMENTAL TRUTHS INDICATE CLEARLY OTHERWISE.

No translation of the bible is perfect. Not even, and especially not the King James.

The stone(the revelation of Jesus Christ not the literal interpretation of the bible being the way the truth and the life) the builder rejected...........became the chief cornerstone.

Jesus did something very imprtant that deals with this problem perfectly, but men have chosen to ignore it.
He Provided the Holy Spirit to teach in His place, to those that prove honest devotion to Him.
Jesus did not rely on the teaching of scriptures for the gospel to be heard, but that the verbal sharing of the gospel and the power of the Spirit would replace misinturpretations men often choose.
Paul would have done much better had he repented of his professional standing, and stayed under the tutelage of the Spirit and Jesus gospel, before ventureing into ministry asssuming every thing he taught was God's will.
Paul's twist to the word grace perverted the gospel to imply God was compromising with sin.
God does not compromise with sin.
And you notice Paul does a lot of back peddling which makes him hard to understand because he is struggling to compromise this issue.
The first words in Jesus Gopel are REPENT, not come as you are, but change the attitude and action about the way you are presently living.
Merely being apologetic ,and doing nothing to change, is abusing forgivness, had forgivnes been sought after.
Jesus taught obedience and demonstrated obedience , not to the paper (man's inturpretation) ,but to the Father on a real time basis.
Notice He taught things beyond those things the bible teachers of the day taught, which got their nickers in a twist.
Jesus revealed that God's observation came from the inside, knowing a man's heart (motivation) which make lies and false humilities and false generosity equally offensive to God .
This obedince can only come from a relationship, not from paper.
Knowing whom to give to, should be done under the instruction of the Spirit, not he prodding of men, nor for men to even make acknowledgment.
One's govern should be comming from God, not self, nor that of men.
Understanding the scriptures, is best learned under the tutelage of the Holy Spirit, and not from the fight over translation.
Nit picking over written words is like the spirit of a lawyer looking to find a loupe hole to protect his cliant. and most often at last resort twisting the meaning of the written word to fit his own agenda.
Much like Satan often does .
Matthew 4; is a good example of that.
A man desperate to find excuses depends on the scriptures to justify himself.
A man in love with God, feels the scriptures are not enough alone, in order to obey God, in a way that pleases Him.

The King James is one of the best translations.
