Jesus said ; "I am the gate, anyone who enters by me will be saved."
Now Christianity believes that Jesus is speaking of Himself personally. He was actually speaking of the position He holds as a servant and son of God. That is why He speaks of the son of man in the third person because there will be others and have been others. That is why He told the men He was tutoring that they would long to see a day of the son of man but would not see it. Why? Because they would fail and Jesus knew it. He said there would be a time that the son of man would be revealed. Could this be that time?
He said ;"When the son of man comes." Notice He did not say when I come. He spoke of the son of man in the third person many times. Because the son of man is the servant and prophet of God.
What Jesus was saying when He said "I am the gate" is that what He was doing is the way into heaven.
That is why He said; "The one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep."
Sure the sheep are suppose to follow but they ultimately are to become the shepherd of the sheep, One as Jesus is One with the Father.
That is why He said;" As the Father sent me so I send you. Go and make disciples of all the nation's baptizing them in the name of the Father the son and the Holy Spirit and teach them to carry out everything I have commanded you."

22 Then He said to the disciples, "The days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.
23 And they will say to you, 'Look here!' or 'Look there!' Do not go after them or follow them.
24 For as the lightning that flashes out of one part under heaven shines to the other part under heaven, so also the Son of Man will be in His day.
25 But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.
26 And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man:
27 They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.
28 Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built;
29 but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all.
30 Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed.

When Jesus said; "If the son frees you, you shall truly be free," he was saying that if you act in truth and continue in His word you would be free because of your induction into the people of God and the son of man, the prophets. That is why His followers are to remain in Him, the truth, the word of God.

Whoever speaks on their own seeks their own glory but he who seeks the glory of the One who sent him is truthful and their is no unrighteousness in him.
