I don't recall there being a directive to do so anywhere? Perhaps some very strict fundamentalists believe that you should always try to conceive, as sex is sometimes viewed only for procreative purposes. I don't think this is the general consensus.
I have never heard of it being held out as a requirement, but intercourse would be the generally accepted tradition on one's wedding night. Whether or not the bride is impregnated is (to my knowledge) rather a matter of chance.
