I do not do the sign or go to a church were people do the sign , but what I have heard of the practice is that is a sign of reverence to God in the sanctuary at church of the trinity and the cross for Honor to the Lord ....Seem like it is an ancient practice and some people look to Galatians 6:17 for a scripture of this sign which says ``for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus ``...... Other Christian church raise their arms and hands to show a release of surrender to God and into a humilities , which even Moses did during the battles which His armies were fighting in the field and if Moses raised his arms to the Lord the battle was winning but if Moses put his arms down the battle became loosing ......

It means, "In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The sign Christians make to signify the Holy Trinity. A sign one is Christian.

I always thought it was a Catholic thing. I have been in Christian churches all my life and have never seen it done in a church setting. I know I have seen it on the Catholic TV programs when I have happened by them. And in movies and TV shows. I suppose that some of the Protestant churches which broke from the Roman church may do it as well. Never heard an explanation of why they do it.

As most Christian traditions the sign of the cross comes from Catholicism. As a general rule most Protestants don't use it even though it was prescribed in the writings of Luther.

The sign of the cross is still used by Lutherans and Anglicans. Some Methodist ministers may trace the sign of the cross in the forehead of a baptized baby, otherwise not use much in the their church.

I think it is just one more thing that falls in the contrarian category: "If Catholics do it, we will not do it".
