Jesus is quoted as saying: Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. (from the NASB)

My focus is on the concept of "destroy both soul and body". It really doesn't concern me what the actual word for hell means.

Destroy (in case one is unclear of the concept):

1. to reduce (an object) to useless fragments, a useless form, or remains, as by rending, burning, or dissolving; injure beyond repair or renewal; demolish; ruin; annihilate.
2. to put an end to; extinguish.
3. to kill; slay.
4. to render ineffective or useless; nullify; neutralize; invalidate.
5. to defeat completely.

The Greek word which has been translated as 'destroy' and as 'perish' is 'Apollumi'. If you do a word search on it to see how it is used in the Bible, you will find that it is used for things which are lost, or for things which have been made useless. With reference to Matthew 10:28 it refers to the unbeliever spending the eternal future in the lake of fire in a state of ruin and uselessness, but not being made to cease to exist. The Bible does not teach annihilationism.

The beast and the false prophet, both human, will have been in the lake of fire for a thousand years before Satan joins them there. It is then said that they will be tormented forever and ever (Rev 19:20 with Rev 20:10). That shows that annihilationism is a false teaching.

Matthew 10:28 by the way also makes it clear that the soul survives the death of the body.

Here's a good place to do the word study on apollumi. Just click on the names of the books (Matthew, Mark, Luke, etc...) at the right and it will take you to the verses which contain the word. >> Apollumi - New Testament Greek Lexicon - New American Standard

Here is another site which explains Apollumi. >> Romans 2:9-12 Commentary Toward the bottom of the page.

It clearly means exactly what it says...Fear Him [God] who is able to destroy [annihilate...extinguish...put an end to...to render useless] .

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not >>>PERISH<<< >>>[burn to ashes...be annihilated...be neutralized]<<< but have eternal life.

Amen.

Hebrews 10:31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Exactly right. I had a list of scriptures where the Greek word is used in scripture and in many places it means to fully destroy. Sinners will die in the lake of fire. The wages of sin is death. Rom. 6:23

One must enter the kingdom of God by the gate. Those who try to enter by climbing in another way are thieves and robbers.

The one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.

" Who can climb the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? He whose hands are sinless, and whose heart is pure.

"Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him"

" The friendship of the Lord is with those who revere him, and he makes his covenant known to them."

"The Lord guides the humble to justice and He teaches the meek His way."

Amen Michael The Disciple...God's Word clearly states that:

And whoever was not found inscribed in The Book of Life was cast into The Lake of Fire. Revelation 20:15.

If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:15.

ONLY those who overcome sin during their lifetime, and die living a righteous life by keeping the Ten Commandments of God will have eternal life and escape the Lake of Fire that was meant for the Beast...Satan, and his angels....

Revelation 3:5 He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels.

...every man will be righteously and justly judged according to their works....

Revelation 11:18 The nations were angry; and your wrath has come. The time has come for judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your saints and those who reverence your name, both small and great--and for destroying those who destroy the earth."

Revelation 20:12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.

Amen.

So contrary to what Mike555 says, it refers to annihilation, NOT unending punishment?

Yes, all that is sinful will be destroyed. Those who are cast into Gehenna will experience death.

And in the end, no more sinners will exist when sin and death are destroyed, are made of no effect.

If the wages of sin is annihilation, then Jesus would have been annihilated. He wasn't.

He died and He defeated death.

Rejoice and be glad in it

God bless and peace.
