A Catholic-turned-Episcopalian-turned-heretic, James Pike was fairly well known in the 1950s and 1960s. He died in the Israeli desert in 1969.

Considering the swings in his declared beliefs over his lifetime, maybe he was mentally unstable.

I don't remember him because I was in SE Asia fighting a god-forsaken war. But he was definitely a man before his time. Yet some of the issues he championed remain on the firing line today in one fashion or another.

Wow what a flashback. I remember James Pike. He was frequently in the news for one reason or another. Very much of a 'sixties' type person. I remember when he died there were briefly some conspiracy and/or supernatural proposals as to what happened in that desert. 1969 was one crazy year.

I'm thinking his venture in the desert may have been less a spiritual quest than the suicide mission of a man who lost his faith and was distraught over the death of his son.

The science fiction author Phillip K. Dick was a friend of his, and based the protagonist in one of his novels on him.

Mr. Pike was never tried for heresy for his deviations from standard Episcopal doctrine. Now his "deviations" seem to be quite popular among the hierarchy at least and has led to schisms within the Anglican Communion.

I saw an old interview with him on William F. Buckley's "Firing Line" recently. It's available on Amazon on-line.
