OK. Mike, I will buy your take on this. Shows me one more reason to believe Jesus was an expert in the written tradition AND that He was an expert in the oral tradition, and therefore had much in common with the Pharisees, remains speculative, I suppose.
However, I will continue to challenge the OP and his criterion for being a real Christian. The willingness and sincere effort to be right with God and be right with your neighbor, and to practice the basic works requirement as described in Matthew is more than enough to qualify as leading a Christian life. That is whqat the people who knew Jesus or who knew those who knew Jesus required, according to the practices of the very early Christians.
