And the whole earth is of one language and of few words,
and it was, in their journeying from east, that they Came to a split in the land of Shinar, and sat there;
And they say, `Give help, let us build for ourselves a city and tower, and its head in the heavens, and make for ourselves a name, lest we be split over the face of all the earth.'

As they journeyed up the east coast of Africa to the horn of Africa they then went east along the north side of the horn of Africa and reached Bab-el-Mandeb where they then split. One group went to Sumeria and the other went toward the land of Kush and Egypt.

Ancient societies in the near east all had temples they expected to cover the entire earth eventually and were homes for their gods. The Babel story fits perfectly within the archaeological paradigm we know of where people tried to reach the clouds where they believed their most high god lived.

The Jews and pagans all talked of God/ most high gods being in the clouds. That was a normal pursuit several thousand years ago. That story has a perfectly good ancient basis.
