The beliefs of early Christians should never be taken for granted because even while the apostles were still alive, even in their own day, early Christians were already starting apostate movements. (e.g. Gal 1:6-9, 2Tim 2:15-18, 1John 2:18-19, Jud 1:17-19)

What do you mean "most Christians"? Most Christians are Catholic or Orthodox, and both the Catholics and the Orthodox regard 2 Maccabees as inspired scripture. It is only the newer, minority cult of Protestantism that rips this book out of the Bible, although they cannot give a coherent reason for why they regard one book as canonical and another as non-canonical.

POSIT: CCC 1032 . . If Job's sons were purified by their father's sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation?

RESPONSE: According to the language and grammar of the Biblical record; Job offered sacrifices for his children while they were alive. There is no record of him offering sacrifices for them after they passed away.

There were many books of scripture left out of the 66 books volume. It was decided by a council of men to put those 66 together and insist that it is the innerant, infallible WORD of GOD. It just strikes me as funny that man whose number is 6 decided to include 66 books in his WORD of GOD and insist that believing those particular books and none other are THE WORD of GOD is one of the articles of faith that one must agree with, lest he/she be deemed a heretic.

I agree about apostate movements starting very early on in Christian history, and you're right that they shouldn't be taken for granted. On the other hand, they can be valuable in helping us learn just how some of the doctrinal changes in the Church took place. I certainly wouldn't simply reject them out of hand because "they're not in the Bible."

This ancient knowledge is twistedly represented in Biblical or other Abrahamic religions in concepts of "hell", "purgatory", and "heaven".

POSIT: Zech 13:8-9 . . And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith The Lord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein. And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God.

RESPONSE: Anybody with a 6th grade level of reading comprehension can easily see that the 13th chapter of Zechariah concerns the geographical land of Israel and the Jewish people of Israel; not the whole world; nor will the surviving third be removed from off the land to be transported to an afterlife region for discipline and purification; but will remain alive and stay right where they are.

The fire spoken of in that passage is construed by some to be purgatory, but the theory doesn't wash seeing as how it's commonly understood that purgatory is located in the world of those who've passed on rather than the world of those still alive.

There IS a type of "purgatory", and the ancient Jews believed in it too, which is where the RCC "stole" it from. They still say Kaddish (prayer for the dead).

The soul and spirit are "married" in the body, and at the death of the body a type of "divorce" happens. The spirit returns to the One that sent it, and the soul stays trapped in whatever SELF-created bondage they did not overcome while alive in the body. The "re-union" of the two, is the first resurrection. We are made to eat of the fruit of our own lips, and with our own wickedness are we reproved. G-d is not mocked. Peace

No one is angrier than a woman who has been rejected.
However, her thoughts will not prevail, while in the grave.
