Here's a far better idea than asking the most vulnerable and least articulate people, the victims, to speak up. When your American council of bishops is meeting to develop a vigorous response to the problem, don't order them to stop.
I respect the faith of individual Catholics, even though I don't agree with their theology. But I have no respect for the institution of the Catholic church, which has behaved more like a gigantic racketeering scheme to abet and protect child molesters.

Not true. Children keep secrets. Did you tell your parents everything?
Children are easily threatened, and coerced unless it is drilled into them to not keep some secrets. Pedophiles seek places where children are available and they have power. A pedophile priest has always been a pedophile. They did not made some jump. They have always sought out children.
It is a parents responsibility to know the adults surrounding their children and be present when they are with other adults.
It is a parents responsibility to tell their children they can tell them anything.
It is the parents responsibility to tell their children that threats from another adults should never be believed.
Above all it is the parents responsibility to trust their instinct when it comes to putting their children in the care of other adults, including family.
At that young age, I did try to keep secrets from my parents, but they always seemed to know when I was lying to them.
Pedophiles who go after little boys have no interest in women. They are mentally ill.
Which, by definition, means that they require treatment (and understanding) rather than incarceration?
By the way, I'm not being facetious. I truly believe that certain people are driven by 'inappropriate' desires that are difficult for them to manage, perhaps at the best of times. And, when in positions of 'easy access' these innate desires become even more difficult to control. Yes, such people should distance themselves from potential temptation but we are talking about human beings.
We have to confess once and for all that the majority of people are totally ignorant on topics such as this one. And those whose responses are basically to 'shoot the wounded' are certainly not only ignorant but also sadistic which could also be a hint of a mental illness of some description. Or, is 'sadism' normal?
As for the remark by Pope Francis ...what was so wrong in his telling youth to be vigilant? How would you 'key-tapping experts' deal with this issue in a commonsense manner rather than anonymously expressing yourselves with such gems as 'lock 'em up and let the other inmates have at them' . . .?

Doctors use to think pedophiles could be cured but from treatment it was learned there is no cure. The church use to take the advice of doctors and that is why so many were returned to work. Schools did the same thing. My son's school hired a man who abused thinking he was cured and they gave him another chance. He abused again at the school.
