NYT article - porous pay wall, but you can view a few articles for free.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/11/w...sex-abuse.html

Ex-pope Benedict breaks his silence with a lengthy missive blaming the Catholic Church's sex abuse problem on the sexual revolution of the 1960s, and societal changes since then. And he is RIGHT!

The ONLY reason that the rampant and longstanding sex abuse by Catholic clergy ever came to light is precisely the societal changes that he cites, because they made victims less ashamed, and bold enough to come forward, even if it took them thirty or forty years to do so. What does he think, that these horrors only began after the 1960s? Of course it's been going on for centuries, probably well over a thousand years. It's just that before the changes in society that made people feel more free to report, NO ONE came forward to report the rampant sex abuse by Catholic clergy!

I'm glad he's speaking up against all those societal changes that eventually gave people the courage to come forward. It's so good to have ex-pope Benedict telling the truth, that the current Church leadership is unwilling to say.

We had the sexual revolution in the 60s. You can't deny this is where all the rot came about. It had been growing for some time but it came to fruition in the 60s and downhill since then.

We would not have abuses if society didn't go nuts. Now we have seculars taking over, it's the same as Rome. Corrupt society.

When people are liberated from religious bondage, they move towards the truth.
Religious male dominance was the exploiter and abusers of women and children.

I NEVER said anything about it being better, but hopefully now that things are being exposed for what they are, things might get better! However, you can roll-your-eyes all you want while hiding behind the facade of religiosity.

Yes, we CAN deny that it "came about" then: the truth is that it was EXPOSED then.

Well, sure you can - since the Catholic Church has an documented 1800 year history of this stuff.....

Why not blame the roaring 20's or the gay 90's? Or Ben Franklin and his drugs, booze and women?

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30040587

"The Roman Catholic Church: A Centuries Old History of Awareness of Clerical Child Sexual Abuse (from the First to the 19th Century)."

From the National Institute of Health.

No Hippies Mentioned.

"RCC developed a culture of secrecy using clandestine organizational management models and institutional laws prescribed in 1568, 1622, 1741, 1866, 1922, and 1962 which aimed to manage cCSA. The current study traces reported cCSA as far back as the first century and critically examines the organizational laws, and institutional policies developed by RCC to address clerical sexual misconduct up to the end of the 19th century."

Next you will tell us Obama did it.

Pedophile priests have been assaulting children long before the 60's. It seems the ex-Pope is giving himself and others cover.
The so called sexual revolution did not demand participation and did not give permission to abuse children.
