I think we're putting the cart before the horse. Don't confuse "member" with "attender". Those churches tend to try to draw a crowd, and then they think they're doing good by having lots of people.
I think church membership would be higher if there were more Christians. Christians know church is important, and they go. And they seek out churches where they can learn about Jesus. The Bible doesn't really talk about Christians that don't care to fellowship with other Christians, or to learn about God.

But God commands that we meet with other believers, worship with them, fellowship with them, and be taught the Word of God with them.
Heb 10:25 "And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."
I don't go to church anymore because there aren't any worth attending. I wish I had gotten out sooner. These are the perilous times of the last days. The Scripture says to turn away from them (2 Tim 3:5). I cannot affirm that any of the pastors I am aware of are sent of God; therefore, they are of no profit to me. Jer 23:32. There are hundreds if not thousands of denominations. Is Christ divided? Has God not confounded their languages like He did at Babel? The history of "the church" so-called quite resembles that of Babel, with men endeavoring to build the tower of Babel (that is, to ascend to heaven by the works of their own hands - by their idols, which their own hands have made), to the confounding of their languages, or doctrines of men.

methinks you place a higher demand on the church today than God did in the 1st Century.

I quit attending almost a couple decades ago, mostly due to that which was being taught.
Churches who have a teachers gift of the Holy Spirit will be anointed to reveal revelation into the scriptures, as people come from many miles away to hear and people can't get enough ....... Most preachers preach what they know and shun teachers but teachers who are prophetic gifts of spiritual teachers go beyond ....., Still prophets of God for faith may not have Holy Spirit teachers gifts

It's a simple question with a yes or no answer. Was this person sent by God? The laying on of hands is an elementary principle of Christ (Heb 6:1-2). This entailed the giving of true spiritual gifts (2 Tim 1:6). The kingdom of God is not in word but in power (1 Cor 4:20).

So your standard to judge a person who should or should not be in ministry is if they can do miracles through their hands?
The Bible tells us to keep coming together (I.e., doing some kind of church activity).
