I'm wondering...been wondering this for a while: (to those of you of the Christian faith) from your understanding of scripture, does God punish some of his children on earth, perhaps for sins we have committed?

Yes. It's called divine discipline. Read Hebrews 12:4-11.

Do you think He would allow mental health issues, or for catastrophic loss, or other calamities for sins a person has committed?

Mental health issues? In Daniel 4 King Nebuchadnezzar was sentenced by the decree of the angelic watchers to live for a time to live like the beasts in the field and to eat grass, and to have a beast's mind. This would be a mental health matter.

When God disciplines the believer He hits you where it hurts for the purpose of getting you to get back on track in your spiritual life. God can remove wealth or health, and even take the believer out of this life under the sin unto death. He is still eternally saved, but is removed from this world under dishonorable conditions.

we reap what we sow, but that is not a punishment of God, it is a law of life.

You may, or may not reap what you have sown, while in this life.
So, exactly when does this divine discipline or correction begin?

If not in this life, then in the next one (Galatians 6:7).
