Are christians religious?

Is there a difference between christianity and religion?

Or, is christianity just another religion? How would you define the two words and what sets the two apart?

It would be nice if we could this subject without directly engaging each other - or referencing other people's post...

To me religion is rules that are black and white, man made. Christianity is centered on Christ and what He says. Christianity is about a relationship with God,not rules.

Christianity is simply following the commands of Christ..It involves doing your very best to be like Him in the way you live your life..Religions involve rules made up by men and carried out by men to boost his pride in himself..

I would also add that Christianity is about love. Love that Christ has for us and love that we have for him. We "do" things out of a love that we have for Christ and as a result of our relationship that we have with Him.

Religion is "doing" things out of a feeling of obligation, duty, or law and is more mind centered then heart centered. One is more "man-centered" and the other is more "God-centered".

There is some overlap obviously. For example, one might give money to the church with two seperate mindsets. One is out of "duty" and one is out of "love".

Here is a good explaination of the difference straight from the Bible.

Matthew 6:1-8

"Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
"So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

I tend to go with this definition of religion.

1.a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs. 2.a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: 3.the body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices. 4. the practice of religious beliefs; ritual observance of faith. 5.something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience (Dictionary.com)

I think that Christianity is a type of religion which has Jesus Christ as the center, focusing on who was/is, what He did and His teachings. Christians to me are followers of Jesus Christ, whereas someone of another religion may be a follower of someone else. As I understand one definition of being religious as having reverence for the Deity/God, Christians are to be religious in this respect. God bless.

Christian - Christlike

Religion - belief system

Scripture defines pure Religion and undefiled as;

Visit the fatherless in their affliction, and keep yourself unspotted from the world. (Happy Father's Day).

godspeed,

freedom

It seems that you're saying that being a christian is not about being religious. There is a difference between the two. Is that right?

So, then if being a Christian isn't about being religious... what exactly does it mean when someone says that "they're a Christian" ?

What does it mean to be "born again" ?

There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

John 3:1-7

I think that the answer to the question really depends on the individual on how they respond to that question, for me to say Im a Christian means that 1. ive accepted Christ as my saviour and 2. it means I do my best to let my light shine for Christ. I dont have to follow any man-made rituals or go thru anyone to talk directly to Jesus. He walks with me and talks with me (to plug an old hymn).

Hi World Citizen, I am not sure who this is addressed to, but I believe that in using the defintion of religious meaning that one has reverence for Deity/God, Christians are religious. We honor God and seek to please Him and as Christians we are a follower of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ to me, meaning that He is the image of the invisible God, the Son of God, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Being born again means that one has been born of the Holy Spirit and is a believer, follower of Jesus Christ, a Christian. A Christian seeks to live for Jesus. God bless.
