I read so many posts that put down the Bible, and yet the posters claim to be Christians. How can they possibly know anything about Christ without the BIBLE ? How can they know anything about God the Father, and the Holy Spirit without the Bible?
Maybe all three are in the Koran, but it is not the book that Christians use to know about them.
If those who criticize the Bible had never read or heard the bible preached, what would they know about being a Christian?
If they do not believe all of the bible, why do they claim to believe any of it??
Mat 13:24 Jesus presented another parable to them, saying, "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. Mat 13:25 "But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went away. Mat 13:26 "But when the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the tares became evident also. Mat 13:27 "The slaves of the landowner came and said to him, 'Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?' Mat 13:28 "And he said to them, 'An enemy has done this!' The slaves *said to him, 'Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up?' Mat 13:29 "But he *said, 'No; for while you are gathering up the tares, you may uproot the wheat with them. Mat 13:30 'Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, "First gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather the wheat into my barn.'""

Because some of it is parable, and some of it is verifiable historic fact, and some of it is contradictory, for example placing someone in two different places, two creation stories. It is an attempt to record in words, something that cannot be put into words. Also osme of it was written to a specific audience, and asumed familiarity with certain literary and spiritual traditions, like midrash, the people it was written too would have known it wasn't meant literally. For a good readable introduction to the concept see Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism by Bishop John Shelby Spong

Well put! My position as well...parables, myths, poetry, story, history, and odd ball visions. For those who are progressive Christians I also recommend the study program Living the Questions. We don't have to check our brains at the door to be Christians...ours is a living God who recognizes that over the course of two millenia man and society change as does man's understanding of the divine.

Regardless of what you call it, it is still all the word of God .....all inspired by God.
Absolutely. And Hamlet, Macbeth, The confessional speech in Henry V, Julius Ceaser, and the Tempest were all inspired by England's History of disputed succession, but they were not literally true.
I believe all scripture is inspired by God, I think all Christians of all stripes believe that. Believing it all (in the sense of accepting it as fact) is different. PEople, including the authors of the Bible are all imperfect, all carry their own prejudices, and all right to a specific audience, limited by the specific time they live in.

I am sorry, but you just do not understand what it means ...that the Bible isthewordofGod !
"Christians of all stripes" may say they believe that, but if they really do, they would not pick and choose what they believe and practice.
God will be the judge as to whether we are seeking to do His will, or if we are seeking to do our own. All christians "of every stripe" need to examine themselves to see if that is what they are doing, and that includes me and you.
