I mean, are you Jewish, too? Should we call you Chews? Is Christianity a sect of Judaism? Then again, the religion is named for a Jewish man, so I guess it makes sense.
Christianity is a sect of Judaism. It is so big now and encompassses so many people that it is ordinarily considered a religion on its own.
It is just Christian and not Chews. Christian means "little Christ". Which is what Christianity is all about, following the teachings of Christ.
The name Jew comes from the name "Judah". This was a tribe of Israel. Judah included the tribe of Benjamin. The rest of the tribes were called Israels northern kingdom. The northern kingdom ended up rejecting God and followed after idols.
Israel is the new name that was given to Jacob (the Grandson of Abraham) by God.
Hebrew means "of the Hebrews" or "of Eber" one of the grandsons of Noah.
Christianity is based on the promise of the Messiah to the Jews.
We recognize that Jesus fulfilled what was written of Him.
What is yet to be fulfilled, will happen when He returns.
Christians obey the Ten Commandments (or they should), but we are free from the other rules and regulations in the Torah - the first five books of the Old Testament.
Those rules are called "The Law" with a capital L.
We are to obey the spirit of the Law and not the letter of the Law.
Salvation does not come from our own righteousness in obeyng rules, but from the righteousness of Jesus, the Son of God.
By accepting His righteousness and His death as full payment for our sins, we are free from another law - one of causality, the law (small L) of sin and death.
(Romans 8)
"The wages of sin is death" (hell).
(Romans 6:23)
Faith in Jesus allows us a way to God, because His righteousness is sufficient and imperfection can not come into the presence of the Holy God.
Jesus said "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, no one comes to the Father, but though Me." (John 14:6)
His salvation was first promised to the Hebrews and first preached to the Jews (the House of Judah), but it is an invitation open to everyone.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16
Christian believers are grafted into The Whole House of Israel though faith, and the New Testament is based on God's covenant with Israel.
It is however, a New Covenant where we get to understand the extent of God's mercy, grace and love for His creation.
Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he,
thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.
But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.
For this the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: Hebrews 8:5-10
I mean, are you Jewish, too? Is Christianity a sect of Judaism? Then again, the religion is named for a Jewish man, so I guess it makes sense.
It was called the New Judaism, brought to us Gentiles by Jews themselves.
(Matthew 8:10-12)
10When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
Believer's obey Yahuah's (God's) Word because they love Him and because it's written on their heart (Jeremiah 31) and because He says to obey it - that is if you want to be blessed and go into His Kingdom (Deuteronomy 28 & Revelation 22:14)!
Hello,
Allow me to introduce myself. This is my first post. I am a servant of Yahuah, a born-again believer in Yahushua (Jesus); grafted (Romans 11) into the family of Israel; therefore I am no longer Gentile (Ephesians 2:11-13) in Yahuah's eyes I am Israelite. And because I am part of the family of Israel through the blood of Messiah I seek to "walk as He walked" (1 John 2:6) - in TRUTH (2 John 1:4) which means obeying His Word from Genesis to Revelation. As a believer I know the "law" of animal sacrifice has been fulfilled by His sacrifice YET I also know that my Messiah said He did not come to do away with the Law, Prophets & Psalms (Matthew 5) THEREFORE because He says that if I love Him I will obey Him (John 14:15-24) then I seek, by the power of the Holy Spirit within me, to do just that by living according to His Word - the Torah which actually means instruction or teaching!
Shalom!
