I've always wondered how different we are when it comes to how we are raised. I wasn't raised as a church-goer or within a Christian family. I know many that were. We are very different. I am a Bible reader vs someone that grew up listening to sermons or going to Sunday school. I seem to be very different than those that grew up attending. I've questioned things...it hasn't been well-received. lol
Anyone else here that has a situation similar to this? Anyone else notice a difference between the two?
I was born and raised a Catholic. I questioned my faith many times and even strayed from the Church many times, but each time I keep coming back to the Catholic Church by one means or another. I've attended many other churches (especially while questioning my faith), but this last "Crisis of Faith" I didn't attend any church at all. Once again...I'm back to the Catholic Church where it seems I belong!

Same here, SW. I was raised going to church until I was 8, but I don't remember any of it. I didn't start attending again until I was 24. My questioning had me leave the first congregation I went to after 3 years because I realized I didn't agree with their teachings.
I raised my daughter in the church. She was just saying last night that sometimes she wishes she could wipe everything from her mind that she has learned and start over. She wonders if anything would be different...so it's so weird you brought this up this morning!

That is strange! I wonder how different it would be had I grown up in a church going family. Until your post, I assumed it would be easier. lol

That's exactly what I did....wiped everything man had filled my mind with, his opinions, his legalisms, his authority, his interpretations, his institutions and rituals..Once I realized I couldn't do it on my own, and cried out in desperation to God, His spirit moved and I was aware and felt it for the first time..and I began to grow..

Lol...maybe easier in the sense that you have all those years of studying the bible under your belt, but not easier in the sense that you have all those years of being taught a certain way.

Miss Blue, I know you know exactly what she and I are talking about. The legalisms that have nothing to do with the bible that are taught in the COC.

I am curious...what "legalisms" are you speaking of ?

The ones she mentioned that she wish she could get out of her mind are things like, not clapping after a baptism, not clapping during singing, not lifting up hands... simple things that are not sinful, but in the churches she has gone to, are taught to be wrong.
I'm not talking about anything that is biblical, such as salvation issues.

Aren't those just more "culrural" things? We're Presbyterian and there is no clapping in church, raising of hands - similar to Catholic Mass. I'm not saying one way is right and the other wrong, just different, and personal preference. I was once coerced into attending an Assembly of God church with a friend (many years ago) and it freaked me out. I couldn't wait to get out of there!
