Some historians and jewish groups expect a William Wallace or Spartacus out of Pius 12, like clenching a long dagger and leading an angry army of daggered cardinals and nuns, running at reckless velocity, at a confused lot of Wehrmacht soldiers. Then Pius 12 will be captured and publicly executed. His death will inspire millions more to rise up in arms. Couple months later Pius 12 will walk off with the Oscar, hands down, no competition at all.
That's exactly how they want it. The hollywood Pope. But things happen otherwise in the real world. Pius was not a man of confrontation. He was clearly sitting his bum on the pulpit with 400 years separating him from the warrior Popes who at least had a namesake army to make use of. And a Papacy already emasculated by Mussolini.
And even the state of Israel and the jews of the time were acutely aware of the countless convents and prayer houses of the catholic church across Europe which sheltered thousands of jews. There wasn't much of a waffle until 1963 when an ex-Nazi orchestrated a play named, the deputy, where Pius was depicted as Hitler's Pope. Probably the starting point of the controversy and the tissue of allegations and lies which have been stacked on Pius ever since, which the anti-catholic popular culture has religiously embraced to this day. Anything anti-catholic is funny, just listen to Bill Maher.
I just can't help but wonder why someone had to wait nearly 20 years for a smear campaign.... while many historians assess that the deputy was flawed and dramatic.
1963, also the height of communism. I can't resist but think of a KGB handiwork to get at Pius, the first thorn in the flesh of communism. Pius was the forerunner to the fight against the stalinist brand of communism, which the rest of the world was slow to catch on to. John Paul II's crusade against communism in the 80's was clearly inspired and something handed down by the vatican ideology against communism, set in motion by the likes of Pius 11 and more importantly, Pius 12.
